Twitch is the streaming platform, and the export covers the parts that are yours: your subscriptions with the dates, the bits you spent, the channels you follow, and every chat message you have ever typed. What it leaves out is everything else. You do not get the chat anyone else sent, and you do not get recordings of streams that have since been taken down.
What you'll get
Before you start
- Go to Settings, then Security and Privacy, then into Privacy Settings. The option is near the bottom and it is called Download Your Data.
- Tick every category offered rather than the first one. The selection screen is not long, and the categories you skip are simply absent from the ZIP with no way to tell you later that you skipped them.
- This covers the account, not your content. If you have ever streamed, the broadcasts and clips are downloaded separately and they are not part of the export below.
How to download
- Click Download Your Data, choose your categories, and submit.
- Wait for the email with the link. A few days is ordinary. Thirty days is the legal ceiling rather than what usually happens, and you only ever find out which one you got by waiting.
- Download the ZIP. It is a directory of plain files with no application to open them in, which is unusual and mostly a relief.
Pro tip
The chat history is yours, not the room. You get every message you wrote, across every channel, and you do not get a single word anyone else said, even in channels you moderate. Twitch will not hand you a channel's full chat log on request, because those are other people's messages. If you are a streamer and you want the chat from your own broadcasts, that is a separate thing and it does not come from this form.
After the download
- The subscription history with dates is the genuinely useful part. It is the only record of what Twitch has taken off you over the years, and it is a very good argument for remembering which ones you forgot you had.
- Bits history is your spend, itemised, and it lines up with the money side of the subscription list. If you are trying to work out what a year of Twitch cost, these two files are the answer.
- The chat file is every message you sent and nothing else. No channel context, no other people, no timestamps you can reconstruct a conversation from. It is a list of things you said, not a log.
- Follows are a list of channel names and when you followed them, which quietly makes a decent record of what you were into in any given year.
- Nothing here is a backup of anything you made. The VODs and clips are downloaded on their own from your channel page, and the export above will not contain them.
