Move from ChatGPT to Claude: Export, Switch & Set Up (2026)

Switching from ChatGPT to Claude is easier than most people expect. Your conversation history can be exported and archived, and Claude has equivalents for most ChatGPT features — though they work differently. This guide covers what to export before you leave, what actually transfers, what does not, and how to set Claude up properly from the start.

What carries over and what does not

The honest answer: your conversation history does not transfer directly into Claude. There is no import tool. But you can export it as an archive you keep locally, and start fresh in Claude with a better setup from day one.

  • Conversation history — exportable from ChatGPT as JSON archive, not importable into Claude
  • Custom instructions — equivalent exists: Claude has a System Prompt field in Projects and a personal preferences setting
  • GPTs (custom models) — no direct equivalent: Claude Projects are the closest parallel
  • Memory — different system: Claude has its own memory feature, not populated from ChatGPT memory
  • Plugins and tools — Claude has different integrations; check which ones you rely on
  • DALL.E image generation — Claude does not generate images natively

Step 1: Export your ChatGPT data first

  1. Open chat.openai.com and sign in.
  2. Click your profile icon > Settings > Data controls.
  3. Click Export data and confirm.
  4. Wait for the email from OpenAI — usually within minutes.
  5. Download the ZIP before the link expires.
  6. Save to a folder named chatgpt-archive-2026.

Step 2: Note your custom instructions

Before switching, copy your ChatGPT custom instructions into a plain text document. These are the instructions that shaped how ChatGPT responded to you — and they are valuable to recreate in Claude.

In ChatGPT: go to your profile icon > Customize ChatGPT to find them.

Step 3: Set up Claude properly

  1. Create an account at claude.ai — the free tier works for initial testing.
  2. Go to Settings > Profile to set your name and basic preferences.
  3. Enable memory if you want Claude to remember things across conversations.
  4. Create a Project for recurring work contexts — this is the Claude equivalent of a GPT.
  5. Add your custom instructions as the Project system prompt.
  6. Claude Pro (claude.ai/upgrade) unlocks extended context, more usage, and priority access — worth it if you were on ChatGPT Plus.

What Claude does differently

  • Projects replace GPTs — a Project has its own instructions, context, and file attachments
  • Context window is longer on Claude Pro — better for large documents and long conversations
  • Claude is more cautious by default — if responses feel overly hedged, adjust via the Project system prompt
  • No image generation — use a separate tool for that workflow
  • Web search is available but works differently — Claude cites sources more explicitly

Keeping your ChatGPT archive accessible

  • The ChatGPT export JSON is your permanent record — keep it in your archive folder
  • Use the included chat.html file to search old conversations in a browser
  • You do not need to keep paying for ChatGPT just to access your history — export first, then cancel if needed
  • Store the archive in ProtonDrive (go.getproton.me/SH2aK) or pCloud (partner.pcloud.com/r/155235) for an off-site copy
